Artist Statement
Throughout the history of western art the human condition has been a constant theme of artists.
The figure has played a major role in artists expressions of these conditions.
I don't make pretty pictures! My aim is to make esthetically pleasing compositions with socially relevant content.
My current body of work is focused on expressing the human condition under the theme of the Blues. As I look out over the landscape of human activities I am captivated and inspired by our humane and inhumane treatment of each other.
Though the Mississippi Delta is generally considered the birthplace of the blues, the story of the blues dates back before the Civil War to the West coast of Africa where countless men, women and children were captured by slave traders and shipped across the Atlantic for forced labor on plantations. Slaves from many African countries carried the songs and music of their respective homelands to America. Amidst the hard work, fear and oppression, they found a temporary escape in the music and expressed both hope and despair in their songs.
The human condition is the subject of the Blues.
